What exactly is inclusive internal communications?

When Priya Bates, ABC, MC, SCMP, IABC Fellow and I were writing our book, we spent some time researching various definitions. But none quite hit the mark so we decided to create our own based on our knowledge and experience 👇🏽

“Inclusive internal communication enables powerful connections, demonstrates
curiosity and cultivates belonging through two-way engagement. This results
in trusted, clear and effective communication, allowing people to thrive in their work and impact organizational performance.”

When I’m asked to support organisation with their equity, diversity and inclusion comms plans, some of my questions will focus on the following:

“What does an inclusive culture feel like for you?”

“What’s a marker of success?”

“How do you define the culture today?”

“What impact are you hoping to make?”

These questions are a great starting point for anyone who is interested in evoking curiosity in this space, especially with leaders who may take a bit of persuasion that building a culture of inclusivity will benefit all.

If you’re looking for a communications partner to support your EDI initiatives, transformation plans or change communications, let’s have a chat!

Let me know if that definition resonates with you and if you’d add anything else?
